November is American Diabetes Month, a time to raise awareness about a disease that affects more than 37 million Americans. Diabetes Education Week, beginning November 3, reminds us that understanding this condition is not just about prevention—it is about stewardship. As Christian women, caring for our bodies is a form of worship and obedience. When we nurture the physical temple God has entrusted to us, we strengthen our capacity to serve Him and others.

 

Understanding Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. Normally, your body breaks down most food into sugar (glucose) and releases it into your bloodstream. When blood sugar rises, the pancreas releases insulin, a hormone that helps glucose enter cells to be used for energy.

For those with Type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin.
For Type 2 diabetes, the body either does not use insulin properly or does not make enough.

Over time, high blood sugar can lead to serious health problems like heart disease, kidney damage, vision loss, and nerve issues.

 

Why Awareness Matters

Many people live with prediabetes—an early warning sign—without even knowing it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than 1 in 3 adults in the United States has prediabetes, but over 80% are unaware. The good news is that lifestyle changes can help prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

God designed our bodies with wisdom and resilience. When we practice good stewardship through balanced nutrition, movement, rest, and prayerful awareness, we honor that design.
Here are a few faith-based steps you can take:

  1. Pray for Wisdom and Strength. Ask God for the discipline to make healthy choices.

  2. Choose Wholesome Foods. Focus on vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains while limiting sugar and processed foods.

  3. Move with Purpose. Regular physical activity helps your body use insulin efficiently. Even a daily walk can improve overall health.

  4. Monitor and Manage. Regular checkups, blood sugar tests, and education are vital. Knowledge brings empowerment.

  5. Support One Another. Share encouragement and accountability within your faith community.

Caring for our health is not about fear—it is about freedom. A healthy body allows us to serve God with energy, clarity, and joy. Stewardship of the body reflects a heart aligned with His truth: we are caretakers, not owners, of the vessels He has given us.

When we manage our physical health, we protect the emotional and spiritual health that flows from it. The mind, body, and spirit work together as one beautiful design from a loving Creator.
